Bricklayer Remanded For Defiling 9-Year-Old Girl
A 25-year-old bricklayer, Laide Joseph, has been remanded in Ikoyi Prisons, Lagos, by an Ikeja High Court for sexually violating his neighbour’s nine-year-old daughter.
Joseph, who pleaded not guilty to the charge of sexual assault shortly after his arraignment, was ordered to be remanded in prison by Justice Sedotan Ogunsanya.
Ogunsanya said: “The defendant is hereby remanded in prison custody and the case is adjourned to February 28 for trial.”
According to the prosecution, led by Mr. Adebayo Haroun, Joseph committed the offence in March 2015 at his residence, No. 2, Oluwasanmi Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos.
Haroun told the court: “The defendant beckoned on the victim (names withheld), and when she refused to acknowledge him, he forcefully dragged her into the toilet in the compound.
He sexually violated her by putting his fingers into her private part. Her cries for help went unanswered.”
The prosecutor said that the girl was too scared to tell her mother for fear of being punished but later summoned courage two weeks after the alleged incident. Haroun said:
“The complainant reported the assault to her mother, who in turn reported the incident to the authorities.” Haroun said that the offence was punishable under Section 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
